When the freighter, “Edith”, was hit by a torpedo on June 7, 1942, Bellom, as the radio officer, stayed on the sinking ship to radio for rescue. The lives of all of the crew members were saved, except for two: Bellom and one other. Bellom left behind a wife, daughter and son.
