Capt. Whiting retired from the Navy in 1937 but was recalled to active duty in 1940 to command the Naval Air Station at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. A plaque in his honor at Whiting Field in Pensacola, Florida, bears the inscription: “Whiting Field, named in honor of Capt. Kenneth Whiting, U.S. Navy, Pioneer in Submarines and Aviation, Naval Aviator No. 16, Father of the Aircraft Carrier in our Navy, Died on Active Duty on April 24, 1943.”
Awards: Navy Cross and Decoration of the Legion of Honor
