Lt. Twombly was killed in action in France on January 6, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery alongside his father, Lt. Col. Claude Twombly and his brother, Col. John Fogg Twombly, III, also a recipient of the Bronze Star.
